Property History & Location:
Situated within Almora, at an altitude of 6000 ft in the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand, Chaukhamba Estate is part of one of the oldest family estates of Almora. It has been in the family for 5 generations and spans over 4 acres across one of the highest and few forested areas that is within Almora city municipal limits. The Treehouse is situated within this private forest family reserve that is ideally situated just 1 km from Almora town centre and yet away from the hustle and bustle. We are at the highest point of the horseshoe ridge of Almora and have spectacular day and night views of Almora town, the Kosi River Valley and the magnificent Himalayan snow peaks.
Location, Location, Location! - Located just 1 Km from the town centre / main market and surrounded by a private forest reserve, we literally have the best of both worlds!
Getting here;
Self drive by Road, Almora is 8 hrs drive time from New Delhi via the Ghaziabad - Hapur bypass - Bazpur - Kaladhungi - Kathgodam - Almora.
By Train - The nearest Railway station is Kathgodam, which is a 2.5 hr drive up to Almora. Kathgodam station has trains arriving from all major cities, including the Shatabdi & overnight trains from Delhi. We can arrange a transfer from Kathgodam railway station.
By Bus from ISBT, Anand Vihar Delhi - direct buses reach you in 8 hrs.
By Air - The recently open Pantnagar airport is a 3 hr drive from Almora and has flight connections from Delhi etc.
Summer Temperatures at Chaukhamba Estate range from a low of 10 degrees to a high of 20 degrees in the Summer. In the Winter it's suitably cold and does snow sometimes!
Parking - Our property is easily accessible via Road and has ample parking space for our guests.
Facilities, Activities and your Hosts
Treehouse & Chaukhamba Estate are all about the outdoor experience! Everything from the Pentalevel architecture of the Treehouse which is wrapped around a 150 yr old Cedar (Deodar) Tree to multiple decks offering 360 degree views of Almora Town on one side and the Himalayan Snow Peaks on the other are designed to enhance the outdoor feel and experience.
The Chaukhamba Estate is a Sanctuary unto itself with over 30 species of local and migratory birds, the endangered Red Giant Flying squirrel have a home within the Treehouse premises!
Guided activities within Chaukhamba Estate are;
Visit the Women Weavers of Kumoun - A host escorted visit to a workshop that has local Women working on more than 150 Hand looms , experience a guided tour that provides insights into the making of some exquisite and globally sold handmade items.
FISHNIC & Fishing - Embark on a half day trip to scenic and accessible spots on the Kosi river to view and catch the Mahaseer fish at close quarters. Chill beverages in the cool river water and Snacks/Lunch by the riverside! FISHING+PICNIC=FISHNIC.
Swim in a Glacial Waterfall - visit a glacial stream fed Waterfall in a tucked away scenic location away from the crowds.
Walks & Treks - Embark on a sunrise or after breakfast walk along the many jungle trails to scenic and tucked away spots known only to the hosts! The experienced Trekkers can head for a half day trek to the famous Kalpvriksh!
Birdwatching - View over 30 species of Himalayan and migratory Birds in their natural habitat from the multiple Treehouse decks.
DIY Campsite at Chaukhamba Estate - If you are new to Camping or would like to have your young ones experience pitching a Tent in a supervised and safe environment, the private Pine forest reserve surrounding the Treehouse is the safest and ideal location. Experience Camping in a safe and clean environment with a fully equipped facility and assistance an arm's length away.
The Historical Hippie Hill Tour - Just 3 Kms from the Treehouse is the legendary Cranks Ridge or "Hippie Hill". "On a clear day, a panoramic view of the Himalayas—from Nanda Devi to the five snow-capped peaks of Panchachuli—unfurls above Kasar Devi, a small hilltop village near Almora in Uttarakhand. Over time I learned that the area, also known as Crank’s Ridge, used to be a pulsing hub of art, poetry, mysticism, and hippie subculture." - A place where Pandit Nehru, Swami Vivekanand, DH Lawrence, Bob Dylan, Robert Thurman (Uma Thurman's father), Tom Leary etc. spent time and drew inspiration!
Experience a natural aquifer - The Ranidhara Naula - situated barely 50 mtrs from the Treehouse is the centuries old Ranidhara Naula or Natural Aquifer. This natural spring provides clean and safe drinking water to the local community by transporting melting snow rain water from Binsar or further!
Mountainbiking - You can borrow one of the house cycles and take a tour of the neighbourhood or take the bike to Deenapani and bike along trails with stunning views of the Himalayas!
Yoga & Mindfulness practice - The Treehouse has multiple decks especially the "Chaukhamba Deck" which is an ideal vantage point for a Sunrise Yoga session accompanied by the sounds of the Whistling Thrush. You can also choose to engage with Ruchi & Sid for some insightful Mindfulness practices and the use of Neurobands allowing you to view your brainwave function realtime!
Massage equipment - You are free to use the electronic massage equipment available at the Treehouse.
Squirrel stakeout - Evening entertainment at the Treehouse includes a patient stakeout on the Deodar Deck for a view of the pair of Red Giant Flying squirrels that reside on the property!
Monkeying around - Every morning and evening a troop of Monkeys swings by providing some jolly entertainment!
Bonfires galore - At the Treehouse every evening can be a Bonfire evening if you would like it so! Snacks on the house!
Shuttle facility to nearby Market, Bars & Cafes - The Treehouse is ideally located just 3 Kms from the Town Centre and 5 Kms from the Kasar Devi Cafes and Bars. You can request a shuttle drop to either of these locations for some shopping or hanging out at the Hippie hangouts!
Your hosts are Ruchi & Sid, both ex-corporate professionals, global travellers with a love for the outdoor life. Ruchi hails from Almora and is a fifth generation descendent of this reputed Almora family.
Ruchi & Sid have a passion for being eco-friendly and socially responsible. The Chaukhamba foundation is spearheading the education and use of Toilets for the underprivileged, stopping open burning and preventing forest fires and creation and promotion of handicrafts. Being an avid knitter, Ruchi has her own handcrafted knitwear label - Infiknity - her products can be seen adorning various parts of the Treehouse. Be sure to pay a visit to Ruchi's crafts corner for local handicrafts.

Morning Tea/Coffee is provided in the Rooms.
A Breakfast buffet is laid out in the Treehouse Dining Room or the open air Chaukhamba Deck.
Afternoon Tea is served on the Deodar Deck.
Dinner is served in the Treehouse Dining Room.
The Kitchen does not normally serve Lunch as most guests are out and about. However, we can arrange Lunch for guests upon request.
Food Menus are entirely customizeable based on Guest preferences with Veg, Non-Veg and Pahadi (Uttarakhandi) Menu Options.

The Treehouse Kitchen has an interesting "Mood Food menu" which can dish out a varied fare from Artisan thin crust Pizzas, to Pahadi cuisine, Biryanis to Momos, Bonfire Jacket potatoes to Cheese Fondue and Ruchi's Cakes & Bakes!

Awesome experience
Tucked in the quaint hills of Almora this home stay is an awesome place. The hosts are more than indulgent, friendly and approachable. We were a group of 10 and were treated with utmost care. Need of each guest was taken care of with a smile. They treated us with some finger licking food and desserts which was prepared in their own kitchen and served to us with love. The hosts provide guided tours to some nearby picnic spots and ensured that we enjoyed it to the fullest. Those visiting Almora should check out this place as it conveniently located and is very well made. It is very clean hygienic and children friendly. Full marks to the hosts. Hope to return soon. Road Trip to Almora with 4.5 yrs old daughter stayed at treehousealmora
Wonderful experience at #treehousealmora . I travelled with my 4.5 yrs old daughter and its was liked staying at home with fantastic arrangement by Ms. Ruchi and Mr. Siddharth .
Guidance from them to reach Almora by road was extremely helpful and made us reach before time.
Amazing food , great hospitality gave us superb time to me and my daughter. We were guided to places to visit in and around Almora which made the stay more pleasant and enjoyable.
Home cooked delicious food and sweet dishes better than market , prepared specially for guest was yummy :-) .
